Increasing Efficiency in the Office

It seems to be one of life’s eternal questions: “How do I get more done in less time during each day?” Here are a few tips to becoming more efficient at work.

Organize your space

There is nothing that can make you feel less organized than a work space that is…well…less than organized. Make sure that your space is free and clear of clutter. If you utilize paper and hard copy files as a part of your job, make sure they are categorized, alphabetized and stored in a corner or drawer in your work space. If you work in a digital world, create file folders where files, images and programs can be organized appropriately.

Plan Out Your Day

Prioritizing goals and tasks can help keep your day on track.  Interruptions that occur daily can drive you off the rails, but the last thing you want to do is lose focus on what needs to be accomplished. A simple sticky note or white board can do the trick and serve as your focal point. Plus, there is nothing more gratifying than crossing something off your to do list!

Stop multitasking

Its ok if you have multiple projects on your plate. Where people can get in trouble is when they try to work on those projects all at the same time. Focus on one task, one project at a time. Prioritize what needs to be done that day and stay on target.

Take scheduled breaks

Sometimes the best thing to do is to just walk away for a few minutes. Whether it’s to get some coffee or to take a quick walk around the building, breaking away from your work for a few minutes can make a huge difference in your overall productivity. Aside from that, a bit of exercise will keep your mind and focus strong.

Working these simple tips into your daily routine can not only help make you a lean, mean efficiency machine, but it can make your day – to – day more enjoyable with a consistent sense of accomplishment.
