Being able to listen is an extremely important skill to have in life. For the most part, we try our best to pay attention, but can sometimes find ourselves zoning out. But, as a practice owner, it is essential to listen to both your employees and your patients. Here are some easy ways to improve your listening skills at your practice:
Look at the speaker and maintain eye contact
There is nothing ruder than having your back turned to someone as they are trying to speak to you. Facing them and maintaining eye contact shows that you are interested in what they are saying.
Pay attention, but be relaxed
After making eye contact with someone, feel free to relax a little, you do not have to stare at them the entire time. Showing the speaker that they have your undivided attention is important, but it’s also important to not stare them dead in the eye the entire time they speak since that can make for a very uncomfortable situation.
Wait for the speaker to pause before you ask questions
If a patient or employee is discussing an issue they are having, allow them to get out their thoughts and feelings without any interruptions. There is nothing wrong with wanting more detail (you should want that), just be respectful.
Think about what the speaker is feeling
Putting yourself in your patients’ or employees’ shoes allows you to gain a different perspective. This will help you better understand how they are feeling, and in turn how you should respond to their concerns.
